Island Azores
The island for nature lovers
The Azores are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of nine large and several small islands. The islands belong to Portugal, but are a long way from the rest of the country. It is almost 1500 kilometres from the main island of São Miguel to Lisbon. In Portuguese, the islands are called ‘Ilhas dos Açores’. This is pronounced something like ‘Iljas dus Assores’. In German, this means ‘islands of the hawks’.
The Azores are located on the Atlantic Ridge. This is a point in the Atlantic where the continental plates of America and Europe meet. This is why there are many volcanoes in the Azores. The summit of the Pico volcano is also the highest point in Portugal. Because of the colliding continental plates, there are always strong earthquakes on the islands.
The climate on the Azores is fairly even. It never gets really cold in winter and never really hot in summer. The weather can also change quickly. Hence the saying ‘If you don’t like the weather in the Azores, wait 30 minutes.’ Due to the fact that the Azores are quite remote, you can find many rare plant and animal species there, some of which are only found on these islands.

Why exactly the islands São Miguel and Pico?
After a lot of research and deliberation, we decided in favour of the island of Pico and the main island of São Miguel. Pico simply won us over because of its secluded and non-touristy areas. Here we were able to experience the beautiful plateau and see some sea creatures from a safe distance on the many whale and dolphin tours.
The main island of São Miguel simply had to be there. Here we were able to explore the many lakes. The changeable weather lived up to its name. Rain and sun alternating within a few minutes was not uncommon. Even in the fog, the interesting areas took on a whole new charm.
For now, we are very pleased to have decided in favour of Pico and São Miguel. Perhaps there will be another holiday at some point when we can explore the other island.
