Island Langeoog
Langeoog – the ‘long island’ – is located in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. It is one of the 11 islands that the North Sea has to offer. Langeoog is just under 20 square kilometres in size, making it the third largest of the East Frisian Islands. Around 2200 people live on the island. The island has a 14 kilometre long natural sandy beach and a unique dune landscape. The sun shines over Langeoog for more than 1500 hours a year.
You can get to Langeoog from Bensersiel with the ferry operated by the island’s own shipping company, Inselgemeinde Langeoog. The island railway then connects the island ferry harbour with the main town. There is no car traffic on Langeoog. Only bicycles, horse-drawn carts and a few electric vehicles are permitted here. Tranquillity is therefore pre-programmed here.
As a state-recognised North Sea spa, Langeoog has a wide range of spa facilities. You can take advantage of sauna, underwater massages, seawater inhalations, drinking cures, brine baths and cosmetic treatments. In bad weather you can swim in the adventure pool.
Many sporting events are organised on the beaches.
The maritime museum with its North Sea aquarium and the Seemannshus (sailor’s house) run by the Langeoog local history association teach about local history and seafaring.
The water tower is the island’s landmark and can be climbed in summer. From the top you have a beautiful view over the village and the dune landscape, which makes up a large part of the island.
At 20 metres high, the Melkhörndüne is one of the highest elevations in East Frisia.
There is a small forest on Langeoog through which you can easily walk from the village to the harbour.

Getting around the car-free island
There is an island railway on the quiet island, which takes you from the harbour to the island’s ‘capital’. The price is already included in the ferry ticket. So just hop on and enjoy the view. Once you arrive in the small ‘capital’, you can hire a bike or e-bike to explore the whole island by bike. The sporty ones can of course also set off on foot 🙂
